I’ll be up front here, I don’t think you need an App to go for a stroll.

One of my favourite things to do in Toronto is to explore neighbourhoods by foot, and looking to an App before I go for a walk seems a little foreign to me.

But as a Realtor, I love this. Walkonomics has broken into the Toronto scene with reviews on 42,000 streets. It’s already covered much of New York, San Francisco and cities in the UK.

It rates a street’s walkability based on the following criteria:

Road safety
Easy to cross
Pavements /Sidewalks
Hilliness
Navigation
Fear of crime
Smart and beautiful
Fun and relaxing

While those are fairly subjective categories, they have addressed how it all works on their site: “By harnessing the power of ‘crowd-sourcing’, social media and open data, Walkonomics aims to become a self-organising system where users correct any inaccuracies or errors in street reviews.”

This could be a great resource for buyers trying to figure out a new neighbourhood. You can search on their website or your smartphone.

Now I’m going to go and add to the reviews for my street – I don’t think it’s as bad as the App would lead you to believe!
