Step inside KENDALL & Co and try to fight the urge to take off your shoes and socks. The rugs they sell are amazing and they are on special this month.

But there is much more to the snazzy storefront on Carlton St. than just the rugs. They offer a wide range of design furnishings and home decorating solutions. In fact, first and foremost, KENDALL & Co is a Residential Design firm.

Starting in October 1998 on Winchester St., Kendall Williams is one of the biggest Cabbagetown advocates you’ll ever meet. He know the houses, their history and how to make them shine. The neighbourhood’s geography – with ample green space and proximity to downtown as well as key transportation arteries made him a fan from the start. That and the village-like feel the neighbourhood retains.

When asked about how the neighbourhood has transformed over the years, Kendall said it really hasn’t changed that much. It is more about one’s perception of Cabbagetown and he has a fantastic story for us: he walked past the same man every day who would hang out on the corner; the kind of guy most people may not even notice. But Kendall would say hello and he would greet him back. This went on for years. Then, on a particularly trying day for Kendall, he walked by and the man asked if he was okay. He picked up on the fact that something was askew. When Kendall confirmed his suspicions, the gentleman invited him for a drink with his buddies, adding quickly “We aren’t into any of that gay stuff but, if you need a friend, we’re there.” Hilarious! What a difference when you get to know people by name and Kendall carries that friendly approach into all facets of his life.

As big supporters of the neighbourhood, Kendall’s partner, Kevin Kung, puts out a weekly FYI on what’s going on in the community. We suggest you to sign up for it by sending a note to kevin@kendallandco.ca. Further, they are very welcoming to local artists looking for a venue to host events and have made their storefront space available several times to painters, potters and the Toronto Guild of Spinners and Weavers.

The flexibility of their showroom allows them to adapt quickly to market trends. From seasonal gifts to custom window treatment – they are ready to help customers find the latest and greatest. With a full-service design studio, KENDALL & Co are set to take on challenges big and small with his design staff. They are also big believers in their exclusive products – those amazing rugs that make any room so stylish are also found in their own home, standing up to everyday life, including an energetic dog, with incredible durability.

So how does Kendall like to enjoy his cabbage? Finely chopped in a pan-fried savoury meat dumpling.
