Each January we all think to ourselves, “I’m going to start this year off right!” What better place to do just that than at Cabbagetown’s Sundara Yoga Studio?
Sundara has just undergone a total renovation and the practice space has been enlarged giving students more room to stretch. Strengthen your mind, body and spirit in this warm, friendly and non-competitive space. Love yoga but need an escape? Pack your bags and take part in their upcoming yoga retreat to Honduras: the perfect winter escape. Talk about a great start to the year!
Founded in June 2012 by owner Angela Jervis-Read, Sundara (which means “beautiful” in sanskrit) offers classes in a variety of styles from Ashtanga to Yin as well as a number of specialty classes such as prenatal, mom and baby, runners, seniors, and trauma sensitive yoga. With a much loved team of 15 teachers, Sundara Yoga Studio has been able to fill the need for a steady studio in the neighbourhood with classes that cater to the diverse local community. Angela loves the welcoming nature of Cabbagetown and with her class schedule there truly is something for everyone.
Angela has lived in Cabbagetown for the past five years and while she scouted all over the city for a place to open her studio, finding a space in the neighbourhood was ideal. She has taught yoga around the world and was excited to bring her experience home. Even over the last 6 months, she’s noticed exciting changes in the neighbourhood with the addition of several new businesses. Angela put it best by noting, “People are starting to believe in Cabbagetown.”
Angela was introduced to the value Cabbagetown places on community through an older gentleman who ended up taking care of her garden. Having seen him tending to her neighbours’ gardens, she approached him for help. Next thing she knew she was fully integrated into this gentleman’s garden care circuit. He operated a “lending library” of sorts between the neighbours, moving a planter here and a shrub there until everything was just right. He was not a gardener but an artist. Sadly, this kind soul fell ill and the neighbours rallied together to take care of the man who took care of their gardens. He lived out his final days surrounded by people who truly cared for him, strangers who had become part of his family. Simply a beautiful and heart-warming story.
Cabbagetowners, it’s time to feel good about starting the New Year and what better way than with a class at Sundara. Trust us, you will find the staff friendly and the experience rejuvenating. Welcome to 2013.
And, in case you are wondering, Angela’s favourite way to enjoy cabbage? “Not cooked!”
