Lancaster Avenue: Beyond the Beer Store

Our next featured Cabbagetown lane feels like a lane but is named Avenue (avenues are typically wider roads, whereas streets are narrower roads, but that’s besides the point).
Lancaster Ave. is a gem, no matter what the name.

Located between Parliament St. and Rose Ave. just north of Winchester St., the entrance to it is easily located north of The Beer Store. Turn the corner and you’ll find three charming brick 2-storey row houses tucked away on the south side. We particularly like the wrought iron fences in front!

On the north the avenue is home to the Cabbagetown Youth Centre which has been operating there since 1972 with great programs for children and youth. That same year the Cabbagetown Boxing Club was also founded at 2 Lancaster. The club offers a wide range of classes for the youth, adults and seniors.

Intersecting with Flos Williams Lane (named after writer Flos Jewell Williams) it has the only fourway stop we’ve ever found in a Cabbagetown laneway adding to it’s charm.

Lane or not, it fits the bill as an interesting off-the-beaten-track place to wander in Cabbagetown.
