Hey Cabbagetowners and those looking to lend the “Cabbagetown look” to their home: decorative cabbages are in stock and ready to liven up your front steps !
For those who don’t know how our neighbourhood got its name, the going consensus is that it stems from the neighbourhood’s original Irish settlers in the mid-nineteenth century. Times were tough and they grew cabbage in their yards for food.
If you’re hardcore and grow your own edible variety, please consider having us over for soup. If you missed the planting season, we think the decorative variety is an excellent runner up.
Why we are cabbage fans:
1. We really like green and purple.
2. a) They add a nice splash of colour.
2. b) For the locals, they add a historical neighbourhood nod in the Fall.
3. Cabbages are hardy and the colours actually intensify with the cooler weather.
4. You don’t need to plant them. They come in a pot. Carry home. Place on steps, stand back and admire.
5. And for you sellers out there: it’s an obvious choice to fancy up your curb appeal. Or balcony appeal. But not your salad…
Where to find your very own cabbage:
Fairway Garden Centre at Winchester and Parliament is well stocked:
