The Neighbourhood

Parliament Street is so named because it ran north from the original Upper Canada Parliament buildings. Today it is the main commercial strip of Cabbagetown and is chock-full of independent shops, restaurants and cafes.

The area was settled in the 1840s by predominately Irish immigrants who were so poor they grew vegetables, including cabbages, in their yards for food. Rising in prosperity in the following decades, the neighbourhood peaked in the late 1800s. Throughout most of the 1900s the neighbourhood was actually a slum but was re-discovered in the late 1970s and the transformation you see today began.

The neighbourhood now features the largest collection of restored Victorian-era homes in the country, leafy green streets and a strong community spirit.
